Malfunctioning Furnace Brings out LFD on Christmas Day

On Christmas morning the Laurel Fire Department along with Delmar and Sharptown Fire Departments were dispatched to a reported house fire on West 6th street. Fire Chief Mark Sheridan responded in Command 81, and arrived on scene to find a single story family dwelling with nothing evident from the exterior. Engine 81-4 arrived with Asst. Chief Keith LeCates and command advised the crew to check for a possible malfunctioning furnace in the basement. Chief Sheridan advised dispatch to reduce the box to 81 units only, placing Delmar and Sharptown in service. Tower 81 and Rescue 81 arrived and staged. Asst. Chief LeCates confirmed the furnace had back fired and their was a light smoke condition inside the structure. Career EMT Whittington checked one female patient on scene, whom later refused transport. Chief Sheridan placed the incident under control and units cleared shortly after.
