Woods Fire Near Laurel
Friday, April 29, 2005

On Thursday April 28th at approx. 1856 hours the LFD was alerted for a Woods fire on Woodland Ferry road. Deputy Chief Jeff Hill responded in Command 81 and arrived on scene to find heavy smoke in the area. Brush 81 arrived and took the only access to the fire area behind Command 81. Command 81 and Brush 81 made their way down a long dirt lane which ended, and units had to cross a freshly plowed field to gain access to the wooded area. Brush 81 started working on fire extinguishment, and Deputy Chief Hill advised incoming E-4 to make their way down the dirt lane and hold there. Deputy Chief Hill advised Sussex Dispatch to alert Blades for Brush trucks assist. E-3 and E/T 5 were staged on Woodland Ferry road and manpower was shuttled back by Utility 81. Brush 71-1 and Brush 71-0 arrived and made their way back to assist Laurel crews. Asst. Chief Brittingham (81-16) and Chief Ron Fensick (71-15) had operations in the woods. 81-16 advised fire was cut off, and contained, working on hot spots. Deputy Chief Hill placed incident under control at 1927 hours. Firefighters were fortunate that the wind had died down from earlier that day, as water supply was going to limited due to four wheel drive access only. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. Last units were clear scene and Command was terminated at 2000 hours.
