Fatal MVC On Laurel Road

On Wednesday afternoon May 4th at approx. 1627 hours the LFD along with SCEMS were alerted for a MVC with entrapment, on Laurel Road at the intersection of Hitch Pond Road. Deputy Chief Jeff Hill responded in Command 81 and was advised by Sussex Dispatch of a possible DOA. Deputy Chief Hill arrived on scene and established Laurel Road command. Deputy Chief Hill found a two vehicle MVC with one Priority 4 and one priority 3 patients. SCEMS (102) arrived and confirmed the operator of the van, and their attention was turned over to the operator of the Nissan. Ambulance 81 arrived and assisted ALS with patient treatment and packaging. Rescue 81 arrived and crew was advised to secure the vehicles and prepare for extrication. E-4 arrived and crew assisted personnel on the scene. Rescue workers freed the driver of the van with assistance from a wrecker from Carey?s. Command 81 placed incident under control at 1807 hours. Laurel BLS transported one patient during the incident. The operator of the van was partially ejected as the van rolled over on top of him causing fatal injuries. Command 81 was terminated turning incident over to DSP FAIR Team, and all 81 units were back in service at 1817 hours.
