Working Structure Fire In Delmar

On Feb. 28, 2006, at 1020hrs., Sussex EOC alerted Station 74,
Station 81, Wicomico Station 2, and Medic 102 for a structure
fire on E. State St. Engine 74-2 responded with Firefighter/EMT Abbott. Engine 74-2 arrived on scene first to find a 2 story structure with smoke and fire showing from the rear of the structure.
Engineer-Driver, 74-20 (G. Adkins) established State St. command. Engine 2
placed a 1 and 3/4 line in service through the front door with two Firefighters on the hand line.
Shortly after the initial crew entered the structure 74 Command arrived
on scene with Deputy 74 (J. Morris Jr.) and assumed E. Street St. command.
Truck 74 arrived next and put a 2nd 1 and ¾ line in service to the rear of the house. 74-15 (J.Kawolski) had Division 1. Engine 81-5 arrived and started opening up the windows and the roof. The crew from Engine 605 was assigned to assist with roof operations under the command of 81-15 (M.Sheridan). Truck 2 from Salisbury was assigned to pull a 3rd line to the 2nd floor to check for extensions. 221-E had Division 2. Truck 2''s crew encountered heavy fire on the 2nd floor as well as crews working on the first floor.
The fire spread quickly through the balloon type construction house consuming the rear of the first and second floor and most of the attic area. Eight companies worked approx. 2 ½ hours to control the fire.
Departments on scene were: 74, 81, 2, 5, 6, 14, 16, 79, & Medic 102.
Station 71 was alerted for cover up at Station 74.
