** DATE CHANGE **
On Wednesday March 12, 2014 @ 730 PM the Laurel Fire Department will make a presentation to the Mayor and Council of Town of Bethel for the plans to build a fire substation in the Bethel area. This fire station would serve the Bethel / Portsville area of our fire district while decreasing response times to our citizens. The fire substation was identified in a comprehensive plan that was completed in 2005. At that time, it was identified that the Laurel Fire Department needed two fire substations to provide quicker response times to the Laurel Fire District. One station needed to be placed east of Sussex Highway (Sycamore station built in 2012) and the second station in the Bethel area.
Bethel, according to the 2012 U.S. Census Bureau, has a population of 171 but has no designated fire station. This is compared to the municipalities of Leipsic (183), Little Creek (224), Magnolia (225) and Slaughter Beach (207) which have a designated fire department to serve their municipality. Travel distance to the Bethel area form the Sycamore station is 5.3 miles and the main station in Laurel is 5.2 miles.
The Laurel Fire Department feels with the cooperation of the Town of Bethel, the citizens in the area, and the Delaware State Fire Prevention Commission, this project can become a reality with all of us working together for a common goal…to protect and serve. Please join us (weather permitting) in support of this project.
