Federal Grant Used to Obtain Breathing Apparatus

In March of 2003 the Laurel Fire Department applied for a grant through the United States Fire Administration?s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

The Fire Department?s Breathing Apparatus was in serious need of upgrading. Application was made for 21 new Scott 4.5 Breathing Apparatus with 21 spare bottles. The cost to fit test members to insure proper fit and safety was also included.

In October of 2003 word was received that the Laurel Fire Department was top be a recipient of the Grant, in the about of $76,959.00. This represents ninety percent of the cost. The other ten percent is the responsibility of the fire department.

During the application procedure, the fire department?s application was enhanced by letters of support from the Town of Laurel, Carey?s Towing, Whaley Seed Store and FS Growmark. The Fire Department sincerely appreciated the support of these businesses.

Through the receipt of this grant the Laurel Fire Department has taken another major step in keeping our members and community safe.
