The dreams of a new fire station took a large step forward on October of 1973 when Carroll Slatcher, Lawrence Elliott, Jim Ellis, Bill Hearn, Edward Callaway, Norman Hastings and John T. Culver were appointed to a building committee. After much discussion had taken place regarding the new fire station two sites became the main choice of the committee, one being on central avenue, and the other on tenth street. At the Department meeting on February 16, 1976 the vote was passed on the floor to purchase the property on tenth street. All the work and planning came to reality on April 3, 1977 when groundbreaking was held for the new fire station. W. B. Venables was the contractor, and the designer was Thompson builders Inc, for this state of the art facility. The construction would consist of masonary block with brick, along with a eight bay apparatus garage, with two drive thru bays, and the largest banquet hall in that area. Many hours of work took place to prepare for the move to the new firehouse. The last week of April 1978 brought an end to the long wait, as the Department settled in. On May 2nd 1978 the Department responded to its first alarm from the new firehouse. On June 4th 1978 the Laurel Fire Department proudly dedicated their new fire station.
