Sunday, February 20, 2005

On Saturday afternoon February 19th, at approx 1515 hours the LFD was dispatched to a House Fire on East 6th Street. Fire Chief Mark Sheridan responded in Command 81 and was advised by Sussex Dispatch of a reported stove fire in the residence. Chief Sheridan arrived on location to find a 2 story wood frame balloon construction house with heavy smoke showing from side ?B?. Chief Sheridan advised Sussex Dispatch to upgrade incident to a working alarm. The box assignment was then filled by alerting Delmar and Sharptown Fire Departments to assist. E-4 responded and arrived on scene with EMS Captain Richie Condon, and Command advised them to pull past the structure and place a 1 ¾? attack line in service. EMS Captain Condon assumed interior operations of the incident. Tower 81 responded and arrived with Past Chief Bill Hearn. Chief Sheridan directed the Tower to back down E. 6th street and set up for Truck operations. The crew of Tower 81 was split and half assisted on fire suppression and half with Truck operations. E-3 arrived and was positioned behind the Tower, and prepared for a reverse lay to the hydrant, if needed. Rescue 81 with Asst. Chief Steve Brittingham arrived and crew assists on extension to upstairs of house. Truck 74 and E/T 74-2 arrived and assisted interior crews, as well as providing RIT. Interior crews reported the fire was under control, with units working on hot spots and overhaul. Truck 14 and E 1404 arrived and staged near the scene. Sharptown units were diverted to Station 81 shortly after, to provide cover-up in Laurel. Chief Sheridan placed incident under control at 1537 hours with crews working. Quick response from Laurel PD Officer Derrick Calloway using a Fire Extinguisher knocked the Fire down. This allowed Fire units to arrive on scene, and extinguish the fire preventing further extension in the home. The Fire was contained to the kitchen area, leaving smoke and minor water damage to the remainder of the house. The last Fire units were placed in service at 1612 hours.
