Building Fire - South of Laurel

On March 16th at approx 1646 hours the LFD along with mutual aid dispatch from Delmar and Gumboro Fire Departments were alerted for a Building fire on Old stage road south of Laurel. Deputy Chief Jeff Hill responded in Command 81, and while enroute was advised by Sussex dispatch of a working alarm. Deputy Chief Hill arrived on scene and confirmed a working alarm and established Old stage road Command. E-4 with Asst. Chief Steve Brittingham arrived as the first due Engine, and Command advised them to pull down the lane, and place their 2 ½ blitz line in service. E-3 arrived next and was advised to pull down lane and supply E-4. Tower 81 was advised to stage on roadway and send manpower up to scene, and place additional hoselines in service to assist with extinguishment of the spreading fire. E/T 81-5 was the next unit on scene and was advised by Command to pull down lane and be an additional supply piece to units on scene. Truck 74 arrived and was also staged on roadway and manpower was sent to assist on fire extinguishment. E/T 74-2 arrived and backed down the lane and supplied the Laurel units. Gumboro units began to arrive and both of their tankers were used to fill depleting units on scene. Tanker 79-3 was utilized as a shuttle piece. E 79-1 and Rescue 79 provided manpower to assist crews with extensive overhaul. Deputy Chief Hill placed incident under control with units working at 1721.
Despite efforts of Firefighters the fire was well involved prior to the arrival of Fire units. The fire started in a building storing farm equipment and extended to a barn with livestock and hay. The original fire building was a total loss and the barn suffered extensive damage. Deputy Chief Hill terminated Command and placed all remaining units in service at 1928 hours.
