Friday, March 17, 2006

On Wednesday morning, March the 15th at approx. 0812 hours, the LFD was alerted to assist the Blades Fire Company on a building fire at the Perdue Agrirecycle Plant. Tower 81 responded and arrived on scene and was directed to the rear of the building. Deputy Chief Jeff Hill was the rear sector officer and positioned Tower 81 to reach the exterior vents of the building, and open them up for ventilation. E/T 81-5 arrived and crews assisted interior crews with fire extinguishments. Rescue 81 was positioned in the rear and utilized for re-hab and filling breathing apparatus. Interior crews battled heavy smoke conditions searching for the source of the fire. Once firefighters found the dryer that was on fire, and ventilation was done, crews were able to go to work trying to get it extinguished. Firefighters from numerous Departments worked well for approx. 3 hours to extinguish and overhaul the building. Incident Commander Asst. Chief Randy Walls (Blades) placed the fire under control at 0952 hours. Last 81 units were back in service at 1254 hours. The cause of the fire is believed to be when a dryer overheated that was used to turn poultry litter into fertilizer.
