Broken Water Pipe Causes False Alarm
Monday, March 20, 2006

On Saturday March the 18th an individual stopped at the firehouse to report a possible house fire on East Market Street. Deputy Chief Jeff Hill went to investigate the report, and found what appeared to be a basement fire. Deputy Chief Hill notified Sussex dispatch to alert 81 for a house fire. E-4 arrived first and crew was advised to advance a 1 ¾ inch hose line to the basement. Interior crews found a main hot water pipe had broken, along with a flooded basement. Firefighters used a pump to remove the excessive water from the basement. Units cleared the scene leaving the pump in place, and returned later to remove it.
