While LFD units were clearing a previous structure fire, a subject approached incident commander Mike Lowe (81-18) of an injured subject, in a house just a couple of residence down from previous alarm. Asst. Chief Lowe proceeded to check the situation out and found a pick-up had impaled into a garage. The driver was extricated prior to our arrival and in the adjacent house.
At this time Asst. Chief Lowe contacted dispatch to alert his station for an Ambulance and Rescue to the scene. Dispatch contacted Chief Shawn Johnson (74-15) who was in command of a second alarm in our district, to see if 81-1 could clear the scene of the dumpster fire in town, and bring the Rescue to the scene of the MVC. 81-1 cleared the scene and returned to station and the rescue was put into service for the call.
On scene BLS/ALS packaged the patient for transport while rescue personnel checked the garage for structural damage. It was determined that since it was a garage and no main support columns were damaged, that no further assistance would not be needed. Firefighters removed the owner?s vehicle and some valuables from the garage and cut away some lumber, so when the wrecker began pulling the vehicle out, that it would not catch on the damaged timber and pull the exterior wall out causing a collapse.
After further inspection of the garage and no apparent evidence of a collapse, the incident was placed under control. Units were on scene for approx. one hour.
