Fatal House Fire - 31523 Mt Pleasant Road

Thursday September 18th at 2102 Sussex County EOC dispatched Laurel, Delmar, Sharptown, MD, Medic 102, and EMS 200 for a Structure fire with a subject reported trapped at 31523 Mt Pleasant Road west of Laurel. Command 81 responded with Deputy 81 (Jeff Hill). While enroute to the scene Command was advised that the subject was out of the structure and that the dispatcher was giving CPR instructions. Command arrived on scene with 1 2 story wood-frame structure with smoke showing from a side door on side “B”. Medic 102, EMS 200, and B81 arrived on scene and advised that the patient pulled from the structure was severely burned and would be a priority 4 (DOA). They subject had been removed from the structure by her daughter. EMS continued with there evaluation of the daughter. Engine 2 arrived on scene under the direction of Fire Chief Mark Sheridan and was advised to advance a hand line into the side door on side “B” of the structure and act as Division 1. Engine 1404 arrived next under the direction of Deputy 14 (Billy White) and was advised to assist Engine 2 and pull a second line to the side door. Tower 81 under the direction of 81-16 (Steve Brittingham) was assigned ventilation on side “C/D”. Additional units from Laurel, Delmar and Sharptown were assigned overhaul and RIT. The crew from Engine 2 encountered heavy smoke throughout the first floor with fire found on an interior wall and ceiling area of the kitchen that was extinguished quickly. The fire caused some extension into the ceiling area of Division 1 and to the floor of Division 2. Ventilation of the structure was needed to remove residual smoke on Division 2 and the attic area. Command placed the situation under control at 2133. Units remained on scene for an extended period of time to assist the Delaware State Fire Marshal with their investigation. 2 ALS patients were transported to NMH for further evaluation. Command 81 requested Blades for an Engine Company standby at 81.
