On Monday, March 5, 2007 at 1018 hours, Sussex EOC alerted Stations 81, 74, 14, & Medic 102 for a reported Structure Fire on Bi-State Blvd. Sussex advised 81-Command (Asst. Chief A. Schweitzer) that they believed the fire was working. Once on scene command was advised by the homeowner that her dogs & turtle were still inside the residence.
The crew from Engine 81-2 arrived on scene and advanced two inch & 3/4 hand lines into the structure. Crews encountered fire on the porch outside the structure. Once inside, crews began to look for the dogs.
Truck crews from Station 74 & 14 laddered the structure upon their arrival. Firefighters Kevin Brumbley & Todd Smith rescued two dogs out of the heavy smoke conditions. One turtle was also saved.
After investigation, it is believed the fire started outside the structure with discarded smoking material. Estimated damage = $5,000.00.
