Fatal House Fire
Tuesday, March 20, 2007

On Monday March 19, 2007 at 8:59am the Sussex County 911 Center alerted station?s 81 Laurel and Sta.74 Delmar and Wicomico County to alert Sta.14 Sharptown for a house fire at 8810 Bacon?s Rd. north of Delmar.

Sta.74 Deputy D. Scott arrived on scene first finding an older style mobile home trailer with heavy smoke and fire conditions on the right side of the home. He advised the callboard and all incoming units that this would be a working alarm.

First engine in was 81-2, which the crew quickly put two hand lines in service. Truck-74 led by 74-15 (J Morris Jr.) arrived just behind them and their crew also put a hand line in service. 74-15 established command, while past chief Bill Hearn from Sta.81 had operations.
It was believed that the home was empty at the time of the alarm, but it wasn?t until a female came running into the scene saying that her husband could still be inside. While crews were doing overhaul, they recovered a body right near where the front door would have been.

They saved as much of the trailer as they could so that the Delaware State Fire Marshal?s Office would be able to conduct their investigation. One firefighter from Sta.81 Laurel became ill during the alarm and was taken to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford Del.

Units cleared the scene and turned it over to the Delaware State Fire Marshal?s Office around 1pm.

Responding units:
Engine 81-2, Engine 81-5, Truck-74, Engine 74-2, Tanker 74-5, Truck-14, Engine 1402, ambulances A-81, B-74, Medic 100 & 102.

Several stand-by crews were dispatched for cover ups for the responding departments.
