LFD On Building Fire In Delmar
Wednesday, May 23, 2007

On May 18, 2007, the Delmar Fire Department, along with the Laurel and Hebron fire Departments, responded for a building fire at the Mulch Man, 36550 Sussex Hwy, in Delmar. Sussex EOC had relayed the information of smoke in the structure, with only one 911 call.

74 Command (Morris) arrived to find nothing showing from all four sides of the building. An employee was on the premises and had relayed to command that she had opened up the front door and black smoke came out. On the arrival of Engine 74-3, a hand line was placed in-service and the crews prepared for entry. After ?popping? the front door, it was evident that the building was charged with smoke, and that we did have a working fire. Crews made their way through the foyer and into the common area, where an office was located. The office was closed up, and forcible entry had to be made. After venting one of several inside windows, the fire was found, engulfing the office space. Extension was kept to a bathroom, just above the fire. Two additional hand lines were placed in-service, off Engine 74-3 and Engine 81-5. Truck 74 and Tower 81 made access to the roof area. Engine 507 controlled the utilities.

FM 17 began an investigation and then requested the ?fire investigation unit? to the scene, sending additional fire marshals, tools, and lighting. Units cleared the scene, with no injuries to report.
