Combine And Field Fire

On Friday afternoon June the 22nd at approx. 1433 hours, the LFD was alerted for a field fire involving a combine, on sharptown road just west of Laurel. Asst. Chief Alan Schweitzer (81-17) responded in command 81 and while enroute could see visual smoke from town. He wasted no time in having Sharptown (14) alerted to assist on scene. Asst. Chief Schweitzer arrived on scene and established Sharptown road command. He then requested Delmar (74) and Blades (71) to the scene. Arriving 81 Brush trucks were sent to cut off the fast moving wind driven fire, while E/T 81-5 handled the combine. Brush 14, 74, and 71 also assisted on the spreading field fire. Additional units from Sharptown and Delmar would arrive and provide water supply to the Brush trucks, and manpower for extinguishments.

Asst. Chief Schweitzer placed the incident under control at 1505 hours. Approx. 5 to 8 acres burned before firefighters could cut it off. One combine was totally destroyed during the incident. Last 81 and 14 units were placed into service at 1520 hours.

Units on scene: Command 81, Brush 0 and 1, Engines 2, 3, and E/T 5, A-81, Brush 14, 1404, Brush 74, 74-1, Tanker 74, Brush 71. Thanks to Seaford 87-9 for standing by at Laurel during incident.
