Brush Fire Upgraded to Structure Fire
Monday, October 22, 2007

On Monday afternoon October 22nd at approx. 1322 hours the LFD was alerted for a brush fire on Old Hickory road west of Laurel. Captain Dwayne Chaffinch responded in command 81 and received reports of fire now involving a combine and spreading towards chicken houses.

Captain Chaffinch arrived on scene to find a fully involved combine and fire traveling towards the chicken houses. Brush 81-1 with Deputy Chief Hill arrived and went to work on the combine and the spreading fire. At this time Sharptown (14) was alerted to assist and Blades (71) alerted to stand-by in Laurel. E/T 81-5 arrived and assisted the crew from the brush. With the fire being driven by wind, command was notified by Deputy 81 to upgrade to a structure fire as extension was now visible in the chicken house.

At this time the call was upgraded to a working structure fire bringing Blades and Delmar (74) to the scene. As Sharptown units and Blades units begin arriving the well needed assistance helped get control of the extension into the chicken house. Delmar units arrived and also assisted in suppression and overhaul. Captain Chaffinch placed the incident under control with units working at approx. 1406 hours. Last 81 units were placed into service at 1459 hours.

The cause is under investigation at this time and date by the DSFM. Special thanks to the Georgetown FD (77) for standing by in Laurel for the duration of this alarm.
