State Fire Prevention Commission Approves Substation - Laurel, DE

On Tuesday September 21, 2010 the Delaware State Fire Prevention Commission unanimously approved the Laurel Fire Department to build a Fire / Rescue / EMS Substation on Fire Tower Road north of Sycamore Road. The station will be an addition to the current Fire Headquarters located on 10th Street in Laurel. The station will consist of 2 Engine Bays, a small day room, an office, bathrooms, and a small bunk room. The station will be designated as the Gerald W. Brown Jr. Sycamore Station.The Laurel Fire Department has been running a temporary substation east of Sussex Highway (US 13) at 11555 Sycamore Road since September 21, 2004. In 2004 the Laurel Fire Department completed a Strategic Operating Plan that identified the need for two additional Fire / Rescue / EMS substations in our fire district. The first to be located east of Sussex Highway (US 13) and the second to be located in the Bethel / Portsville area. The Department is currently looking for property in the Bethel / Portsville area. Mr. Robert Stickles from Cabe Associates is assisting the Department with a USDA loan to build the station. Mr. Martin Dusbiber from Delaware Architects LLC has designed the building. The Department is planning to break ground in Spring 2011 with completion of the station in fall 2011. The Laurel Fire Department would like to thank Senator Robert L. Venables, Mayor John J. Shwed, Dale Dukes and family from Dukes Lumber, Jay James - Planned Poultry, Sussex County EMS Director Robert Stuart, Richard Small – Nationwide Insurance, Epworth Christian School, Children’s Place Discovery and Learning Center, The Hen House, Dave Brown – Sussex Irrigation Co, Inc, and all the residences in the Sycamore area that wrote letters of support to the State Fire Prevention Commission for the fire station.
